The Guarantee of Our future

May 21st, our EAL class had a debate about comparing the Chinese public schools and American public schools, and find out which one is better. I was in the affirmative side and supported the opinion that said Chinese public schools are better than American schools. But after the debate, I considered that I should think more about this issue. Now, I am standing in the middle.

When we talk about schools, we know that they offer us education. Education is the most basic thing that supports a person’s life. Education influences everything in our life, our personality, attainment and the most important our future. It also can be a standard that measures a person’s achievement.

The reason why I stand in the middle is because after the debate, I found that whether Chinese or American public schools, they all have some disadvantages and those disadvantages might influence our future.

First talking bout American schools. Although they have many advanced educational conditions like huge classroom, less people, high standard equipment and various subjects. But they haven’t maintained their comprehensive edge. The classes are too open. Children can do whatever they like. For this reason, children cannot learn very much, this causes some students can’t do well at some specific subjects like math and science, which are very important for students’ future.

For the Chinese public schools, they also have a big weakness—its exam-oriented education. This education mode causes tons of pressure to students. The students study for the endless tests all day long since the schools teach the students nothing but test. They keep brainwashing the students and keep telling them if you do well in your exam, you will win in the future. But the truth is the schools in China never teach students how to survive. Our education backgrounds are useless if we don’t have ability to work, to survive, and to live alone when we get into university.

In short, both education systems of these two countries have weaknesses. Although we can’t change it now, we can still adapt them. The things we need to do is improve ourselves whenever we are studying in any situation.

Thank you Bruce. I find this quite a powerful piece of writing. You have used rhetoric to great effect, and made your message and purpose crystal clear. While it was an objective of the task that you cite evidence to support your case, I can see that you have opted for a more moralistic stance on the role of education, and employed pathos to help persuade your audience.

    Great effort Bruce!
